OUR COMMUNITY

Long Beach, population 461,522, is the second largest city in Los Angeles County (LA County) and the fifth largest in California. It has one of the most diverse urban populations in the country.

  • 65% minorities, 60 different languages and 41 different cultures

Long Beach has the largest population of Cambodians outside of Cambodia.

Uninsured

According to the LA County Department of Health Services (LACDHS), over 64,000 adults and 14,000 children are uninsured.

Poverty Levels

Long Beach is the sixth poorest city in LA County. Over 30% of the population is younger than 25 years old and females head approximately 33% of households with children. Approximately 55% of these female-headed households are living in poverty.

In census tracts targeted by TCC, approximately 99% of the population live at or below 200% of the poverty level. Roughly one-third of Long Beach children and youth live in poverty. Out of 101 schools in the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), 86 receive Title 1 funding and over 68% of the children enrolled receive free or reduced lunches, compared to 46.8% in all of California.
